What to Expect During the Permanent Makeup Healing Process

If you’re considering permanent makeup, it’s important to understand how the healing process works. Knowing what to expect can help you feel confident and avoid unnecessary worry during the days and weeks following your appointment.

At GLAMHER, we guide every client through proper preparation and aftercare to ensure beautiful, long-lasting results. While each person’s skin heals slightly differently, most permanent makeup treatments follow a similar healing pattern.

Below is a general overview of what you can expect after your appointment.

Immediately After Your Appointment

Right after your treatment, the area may appear slightly darker or more defined than the final healed result. This is completely normal.

You may also experience:

• Mild redness

• Slight swelling

• Tenderness in the treated area

These effects usually subside within the first 24–48 hours.

At this stage, the pigment will appear more intense because it is fresh and the skin has not yet begun its healing process.

Days 3–7: The Flaking Stage

As your skin begins to regenerate, you may notice light flaking or peeling. This is a natural part of the healing process as the outer layer of skin renews itself.

During this stage:

• The treated area may appear patchy or uneven.

• Mild itching may occur.

• Flaking skin may shed naturally.

It’s very important not to pick or scratch the treated area, as this can remove pigment and affect the final result.

Following your aftercare instructions carefully will help support smooth healing.

Days 7–14: The “Ghosting Phase”

Many clients experience what is often called the ghosting phase, where the color appears significantly lighter or almost faded.

This happens because a thin layer of healing skin temporarily covers the pigment.

This stage can sometimes cause concern, but it is completely normal. As the skin continues to heal, the color gradually reappears and softens into a more natural tone.

Weeks 3–6: The Final Result Begins to Appear

As the skin fully heals, the pigment settles into the skin and softens in color. At this stage, your results will appear more natural and balanced.

By around 4–6 weeks, the skin is usually fully healed and ready for the next step if needed.

The Perfecting Session

Permanent makeup is considered a two-step process.

Because every person’s skin heals differently, a perfecting session is typically recommended about 6–8 weeks after the initial treatment.

During this appointment, we can:

• Reinforce pigment where needed

• Refine shape or symmetry

• Ensure the final result looks soft and even

This step helps achieve the most beautiful and long-lasting outcome.

Supporting Beautiful Results

Proper preparation and aftercare play an important role in how well permanent makeup heals.

Avoiding excessive sun exposure, following aftercare instructions, and allowing the skin to heal naturally will help maintain pigment retention and overall results.
